Prepairing for your stay  

Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Since the 1st of January 2012 every tourist needs to organize a visa for visiting Sri Lanka. This shall be ordered online as an “Electronic Travel Authorization” (ETA) under The passport needs to be valid for at least 6 month longer then the planned visit in Sri Lanka. It is also possible to contact the Sri Lankan embassy in your country or your local travel office.  

Do I need any special vaccinations?

As Sri Lanka is a tropical country, there are some vaccinations recommended. Please contact your doctor or a special institute for tropical medicine.  

Do I need to do anything special to prepare for my stay?

If you want to use the ATM machines here with your debit or credit card, it could make sense to check with your bank, if the card can be used in Asia. Sometimes the bank needs to unlock this security feature. 

What should I bring?

We suggest you bring loose and comfortable clothing, swimming wear, sunglasses, hat, casual and comfortable sandals/shoes, exercise wear and sun protection.

Where is Niyagama House located?

Just a stone’s throw away from the Indian Ocean, Niyagama House is located 9 kilometer inland from the costal city of Galle in the south of the island. The distance to the airport in Colombo is 130 km. 

How can I get to Niyagama House?

With our shuttle service from the airport. With the bus or train until Galle. From there we can pick you up.

What is your check in and check out time?

The Check in time is 2 pm. The Check-out time is 12 am. Late check out or early check in can be arranged on availibilty.

Can I smoke in Niyagama House?

Niyagama House is a non-smoking facility and smoking is prohibited in the whole house and at the pool. However we do offer a "secret" smoking place just behind the pool.

Do you serve alcohol?

We do not serve alcohol, but you can bring your own, store it in the room fridge and enjoy it also on the verandah togehter with your meal.

Do you provide driver accommodation?

Unfortunately we can't provide driver accommodation right now, but there are some good, easy accomodations just a 10 minutes drive away.

What facilities do you provide in the guest rooms?

Do your guestrooms have TV?

To optimize the opportunities for rest and relaxation, we do not have televisions in our guest rooms. Instead, we aim to offer a beautiful environment in the middle of nature, where you will be undisturbed by the 'noise' and performance pressure of modern society.

In our multimedia room you find a range of selected movies for your entertainment.  

Do you offer air conditioning in the guest rooms?

Yes. All rooms do have air conditioning.

In case you don't like AC and your stay is four days or longer, we can provide the service, to take away the glass elements in front of our natural air circulation wood carvings aboce the doors and windows. Then you can enjoy the room with ceiling fan and without AC.

Do you offer in-room internet connection?

WIFI  (internet conncetion without cable) is available in the public areas. There is also the Niyagama House Guest iPad, that you can use free of charge.

Kitchen  & Dining  

What if I have special dietary preferences and needs?

 Niyagama House offers menu options for many dietary preferences, from delicious salads and raw food preparations to fresh juices. Please just let us know and we try our best to create some tasty solutions

Do you serve meat or is it just vegetarian and fish?

Yes, we have a variety of lamb and poultry dishes available. But no pork or beef is served in respect of the major religious traditions in Asia.


What is the dress code for lunch and dinner?

The dress code is casual, relaxed clothing. Swim wear is not accepted.

Do you offer private candle light dinners?

Yes. Upon request we can arrange a romantic candle light dinner at the pool, the sunset balcony, the roof terrace or on your private balcony.

Do you offer room service?

Yes, we do. Room Service is available from 6am to 10pm.

Detox (Inner cleaning of the body) & Ayurveda Kitchen

What kind of detox and ayurveda kitchen do you offer?

Niyagama House offers several gentle choices for detoxifying your body or following the old ayurvedic wisdom for healthy eating:

Do a day of juice fast with our delicious fresh fruit juices or vegetable juices in addition with special herbal teas.

Discover your dosha (Vate, Kapha, Pita) and follow some general recommendations about which ayurvedic food for perfect for your dosha type.

Balance your body PH and try some advices of the PH diet.

General Questions

What are the opening hours for the Niya Spa?

Spa Treatments will be possible between 10am and 7 pm. In our first season we kindly ask you to prebook your treatment one day in advance.

Do you offer a shuttle service to Galle Fort and Unawatuna Beach?

No matter where you want to go: We can provide a shuttle in a tuktuk, our jeep or our minivan. If you wish, the same driver can pick you up later, at the end of your excursion.

Do you allow children at Niyagama House?

Only children with the age of 12 and above are permitted at Niyagama House. This has two reasons: firstly there are some steep drops from some of the terraces or in the tea plantation. Secondly we are offering a place of peace and tranquility for people who like to improve their wellbeing. And this would be very boring for small, active children ;-).

Please note, that we don’t offer any special faciliites or services for children.

The access to the Spa is not permitted below the age of 16.

Is Niyagama House a good place for someone travelling alone?

Yes, it’s an ideal place to come alone. Niyagama House is a relaxed, safe and friendly environment. At our community table guest can meet, if they like some company during dinner. This is a great way to connect with other guests.

As we offer guided tours, you can have a look at many beautiful places without bothering about cheeky tuktuk drivers or too curious people.

In the low season there is a price reduction for single occupancy. And there is no room supplement for solo travellers throughout the whole year.

Is there a minimum stay?

Yes. To keep our small house as peaceful as possible, there is a minimum of two nights in the low and high season. In the peak season (15th of december until 15th of january and the two  easter weeks) is a minimum stay of four nights required.

Can I pay on arrival?

Our room inventory is very small, therefore to guarantee a reservation we ask that you pay a deposit at the  time of booking. The balance can be paid at the end of your stay with us. For further information , please check our Terms and Conditions.

Where can I buy a local Sim Card for my phone?

In the arrival hall at the airport you find stalls from all telephone companies. RAUS: There you can buy a special tourist sim card. The price is between 7 and 12 UDS.

You also can buy a Sim Card in Galle. The prepaid cards for recharging your phone can be bought in any communication shop or pharmacy.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept Mastercard and Visa Card. We also accept foreign currency.

What languages does your staff speak?

English, german, singalese.

What is the electrical supply?

We have a  230 Volt system with three pin square plugs, but we can happily provide you with an adaptor if needed.
